Physical fitness refers to either general fitness, which is a state of overall health and well-being; or, specific fitness, which refers to the ability to perform specific tasks, sports or occupations. Physical fitness is achieved through regular exercise, proper diet and nutrition, and proper treatment and rest for the body at times when injury or over-exertion occurs.
In training for fitness, work towards broader goals of having overall well-being, rather than narrower goals of getting larger muscles for their appearance. A regularly carried out, moderate exercise regimen and a healthy diet can improve your muscle tone, skin, hair and nails—in short, your total appearance.
Based on statistics and research findings, men tend to die at a younger age than women do. They also tend to have more chronic illness than women, and fall ill earlier. Below is a list of diseases men are prone to.
- AIDS (particularly in America)
- Bladder cancer
- Duodenal ulcer
- Emphysema
- Gout
- Heart attack
- Inguinal (groin) hernia
- Kidney stones
Men particularly need to pay attention to their heart health and cholesterol levels. Men are prone to getting heart disease, which causes stroke and in the worst cases, death.
There are many factors why men tend to fall ill faster and more often than women. Biological factors cite hormones and cholesterol levels, as men tend to have higher cholesterol. Social and behavioral facts indicate that men tend to partake in riskier behavior than women. They are also prone to more vice related diseases such as lung cancer (from smoking) and kidney disease (from alcoholism).
Aside from the above reasons, most men tend to be in denial about their overall health, even when symptoms show the opposite. Instead of seeking medical health, they would rather keep whatever they feel to themselves, called the Ostrich Mentality or John Wayne Syndrome.
